SUGAR-SWEETENED BEVERAGES / DESCRIPTION OF THE SIMULATION MODEL
We developed a mathematical model that allows us to estimate the burden of disease attributable to sugary drinks and the potential impact of interventions aimed at reducing their consumption.
This model compares a world with the current consumption of sugary beverages in the countries analyzed, with a world in which there is no consumption. To estimate the impact on disease burden, both the direct effect of the consumption of sugary drinks on health and the effect produced through the increase in the body mass index (BMI) and its association with different pathologies are used. At the same time, the impact of each pathology associated with changes in BMI is evaluated in terms of quality-adjusted life years and costs for the health system.
