We promote good practices in the management of research funds in South America

The Institute for Clinical and Health Effectiveness (IECS) launched the Research Grants Administration Capacity Strengthening in South America project, with the aim of strengthening institutional capacity in the administration of research funds granted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal funders.

This project, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), was obtained through the IECS Project Management Office and began in August 2024, representing a key milestone in the efficient and transparent management of research resources. The project's principal investigator (PI) is Gilda Follieti, while Claudia Arizaga serves as co-principal investigator (Co-PI). Also at Tulane University, Kathleen Kozar, Executive Director – Sponsored Projects Administration, actively collaborates in the implementation of this initiative.

Training and best practices in grant management

Research Grants Administration Capacity Strengthening in South America seeks to improve the administrative capabilities of IECS by training its staff in best management practices grants, in collaboration with Tulane University (USA).

The project has two key objectives: on the one hand, Strengthen the capacity of IECS in managing international financing, ensuring compliance with high standards and requirements. On the other hand, it seeks to share this knowledge at institutional, national and regional levels, promoting the creation of the Community of Practice"Bridge to Excellence Grants & Research Management Community of Practice".

Efficient fund management in line with international standards will not only allow IECS to optimize its resources, but also free researchers from administrative tasks so they can focus on generating quality scientific knowledge and evidence.

Key project activities

To achieve its goals, the project will develop concrete initiatives such as:

  • specialized training in grants management for the IECS team.
  • Improving standardized procedures, ensuring transparency and efficiency in fund management.

A long term vision

This project is part of a long-term vision that seeks to generate a broader impact in the region, facilitating collaboration between institutions and promoting the sustainability of research funded through grants international.
