Research on Health Control Strategies of the Aedes Aegypti Mosquito in Latin America E

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is one of the main threats to public health in Latin America and the Caribbean, as it is the vector of diseases such as dengue, Zika and yellow fever. These diseases can cause serious illness, even death, and have a significant impact on the region's economy.

Projects of the IECS

The Institute of Clinical and Health Effectiveness (IECS) has led several research projects related to the control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Latin America. These projects have contributed to improving the effectiveness of mosquito control interventions, including:

Research into new biological control strategies, such as the use of transgenic mosquitoes.
The development of new tools for mosquito diagnosis and surveillance.
Evaluating the effectiveness of existing control interventions.

Disease Burden

In recent years, the burden of these diseases has increased in the region.

Dengue

In 2016, there were 2,4 million cases of dengue in LAC, representing a 30% increase over the previous year.

Zika

Zika also emerged in Brazil in 2015 and spread rapidly throughout the region, increasing the prevalence of microcephaly, stillbirth, and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Yellow fever

Yellow fever is also re-emerging as a public health concern, with recent outbreaks in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela.
