Trial of the Use of Antenatal Corticosteroids in Developing Countries (ACT)
Period: 2012-2014 The main objective is to evaluate a complex intervention for the identification of women at high risk for preterm birth and the administration of antenatal corticosteroids to reduce neonatal mortality. This cluster RCT is on-going in more than a 100 communities and facilities in Argentina, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Pakistan, and Zambia. The study is coordinated by IECS under the NICHDs Global Network for Womens and Childrens Health Research (GN). Researchers Althabe F, Mazzoni A, Gibbons L, Belizán J, Cormick G. Abstract This cluster RCT is ongoing in more than a 100 communities and facilities in Argentina, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Pakistan, and Zambia under the NICHDs Global Network for Womens and Childrens Health Research (GN). The main objective is to evaluate a complex intervention for the identification of women at high risk for preterm birth and the administration of antenatal corticosteroids to reduce neonatal mortality. For this evaluation, the study relies on a prospective Maternal and Perinatal Health Registry implemented since 2008, in all GN sites, to provide maternal and perinatal population-based statistics. Up to May 2013 the Registry enrolled 352,524 pregnant women and women at delivery, 13766 of them in Argentina, with 99% follow up at 42 days postpartum. Objetives To reduce neonatal mortality through increasing the rate of Celestone® administration to eligible women.
