EXCESS MORTALITY IN ARGENTINA

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on global mortality rates. In Argentina, during the years 2020 and 2021, the numbers of total deaths exceeded the average number of total deaths of previous years by 10% and 28%, respectively. 

INDICATOR

Due to the abrupt and exceptional nature of the pandemic, the concept of "excess deaths" has gained relevance as a robust indicator both to measure the global impact of the pandemic and related interventions, and to evaluate a possible under-reporting of deaths attributed to the pandemic. COVID-19.

CONCEPT

Excess Mortality is defined as the number of deaths that occurred in a period of time that exceeds the limit of what is expected as “normal”, based on historical records. It represents a robust and useful measure for evaluating the impact of the pandemic.

OBSERVATORY

The Excess Mortality Observatory in Argentina is an interactive visualization that allows the construction of excess mortality indicators with temporal and regional disaggregation, as well as the comparison of indicators constructed with different methods.
